Breeding Frontosa Cichlids

Kigoma Frontosa Fry 24 days old

Another female was holding so I decided to go to the trouble of catching her and stripping the fry. The process takes about 30 minutes because I have to pull all of the rocks out of my tank in order to catch her without stressing her too much. The last few times I had females holding eggs I simply let nature take its course and all the fry were eaten within days. These frontosa fry are about 24 days old and are already eating crushed flake food. There were nineteen fry in this batch of frontosa babies.

4 Month old Frontosa Fry

This little guy is one of only three that remain from a batch of 28 fry that I stripped back in June. I had a little filter problem in my 10 gallon nursery tank and most of the fish got sucked up the intake tube. I solved the problem by placing a small piece of panty hose over the intake tube. It seems to be working fine, but I have to clean it off frequently as the food gets trapped against the panty hose pre-filter. I guess an AC 500 isa little much filtration for a ten gallon tank, but that’s all I’ve got.

125 gallon Frontosa Tank

After I stripped the fry and released the female, I took a minute to re-decorate the 125 gallon frontosa tank. It is always nice to re-arrange things and create some new caves and hiding places. I added a huge chunk of lace rock in one corner that has hundreds of tiny holes and caves. I am hoping that there is enough hiding places that a few fry can survive the next time a female is holding.
